For the past sixteen years, United Shockwave Therapies has been widely recognized as a market leader in the use of extracorporeal shockwave technology. United Urology Centers, an affiliate of United Shockwave Therapies, was established in 1986 after the FDA approved Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) for the treatment of kidney stones. Since 1986, United Urology Centers has treated patients at more than 72 hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, and physician offices throughout Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, New York and Wisconsin.
Building on our expertise in the provision of shockwave therapy services, we added ESWT to our product line in August 2002. Since August 2002, we have treated approximately 2,500 patients at over 100 sites of service, including hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, MRI centers and other healthcare-related facilities, throughout 26 states in the Midwest, Northeast and West.
United Shockwave Therapies complies with the highest standards of care for its services and is proud to be a provider accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). The Joint Commission established the Ambulatory Health Care accreditation program in 1975 to encourage quality patient care in all types of freestanding ambulatory care settings, including services provided by transmobile providers.
United Shockwave Therapies has a Quality Improvement Committee (QIC) that continually monitors the quality of its services and the manner in which such services are delivered. The QIC is comprised of practicing physicians and podiatrists that are well known and respected among their peers; they have distinguished themselves as practitioners and have strong academic credentials. In addition, the QIC is comprised of a registered nurse, a radiology technologist, United Shockwave Therapies' chief operating officer, chief financial officer and the Company's compliance/privacy officer.
The QIC's responsibilities include setting medical policy for the Company and reviewing every procedure performed (since the previous meeting) paying particular attention to those cases that fall outside the Company's prescribed protocol (a discussion of the treatment protocol follows). To review the cases and determine which doctor is acting outside the proscribed protocol, the QIC reviews the technologist's form and the patient's medical records. Depending on its review, the QIC may take punitive action against the offending physician ranging from a written warning or preventing such physician from treating altogether.
The QIC may modify the Company's documentation to ascertain other information and track patient outcomes that will assist us in enhancing the delivery of our services. Moreover, the QIC may conduct studies and additional research based on the information collected. The QIC continually reviews and, as necessary, modifies the Company's treatment protocol(s) based upon changes in technology or any new clinical studies that have been published since the previous meeting. Because customer service is important to United Shockwave Therapies, a patient satisfaction survey and a physician satisfactory survey are routinely conducted; the results of which are used to change or modify the manner in which United Shockwave Therapies delivers its services. Moreover, the results of the surveys are provided to our physician-users.
